Federal Solar Rebate

Australian Government Solar Incentive

The Australian Government provides financial support for eligible rooftop solar systems through the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme, commonly known as the SRES.

Under the scheme, eligible solar systems can create Small scale Technology Certificates, known as STCs. These certificates have a value and are commonly assigned to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront reduction in the cost of installing solar.

Important: Although this incentive is commonly referred to as the federal solar rebate, it is not a fixed cash rebate. The benefit is generally provided through the value of STCs created by an eligible solar system.

How the Federal Solar Rebate Works

Eligible solar systems can create Small scale Technology Certificates based on the amount of renewable electricity the system is expected to generate over the remaining life of the scheme.

Each STC has a market value. Instead of most homeowners creating and selling the certificates themselves, they usually assign the right to create the STCs to a registered agent.

In return, the value of those STCs is generally provided as an upfront discount on the solar installation price.

This is why many solar quotes show an STC discount already deducted from the total system price.

What Are Small Scale Technology Certificates?

STCs are certificates created under the Australian Government's Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

For eligible solar photovoltaic systems, the number of STCs available is based on factors such as the system size, geographic location and the amount of renewable electricity the system is expected to generate before the scheme ends.

STCs have a financial value because liable entities purchase certificates to meet their obligations under Australia's Renewable Energy Target.

Who Is Eligible for the Solar STC Incentive?

To receive STCs, a solar system must meet the current Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme eligibility requirements.

The system must use eligible equipment and be installed in accordance with the applicable scheme requirements. Eligibility is determined after installation when an STC application is submitted.

Customers should confirm that the proposed system and installer meet current requirements before proceeding with an installation.

Most residential rooftop solar systems fall within the small scale system category, subject to current capacity and eligibility limits.

How Much Is the Federal Solar Rebate?

There is no single fixed dollar amount for the federal solar incentive.

The value of the STC benefit depends on factors including:

  • The size of the solar system
  • The location where the system is installed
  • The installation year
  • The remaining deeming period under the SRES
  • The number of STCs the system is eligible to create
  • The market value of STCs at the time

Because these factors vary, two solar systems of different sizes or installed in different years may receive different levels of support.

Does the Solar Rebate Reduce Each Year?

Yes. The number of STCs available for eligible solar systems generally reduces over time because the deeming period becomes shorter as the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme approaches its end date.

For systems installed in 2026, the current deeming period is five years. This reduces to four years for systems installed in 2027, three years in 2028, two years in 2029 and one year in 2030.

The scheme is scheduled to end on 31 December 2030.

Do I Need to Apply for STCs Myself?

Usually not.

Most homeowners assign the right to create and sell their STCs to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront reduction in the cost of their solar system.

It is possible for a system owner to create and sell STCs themselves, but the process involves registration, documentation and compliance requirements.

For most residential customers, having the STC value incorporated into the solar quote is the simpler option.

Can STCs Apply to Solar Batteries?

Eligible solar batteries are also supported under the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme through the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Battery STC eligibility and calculations are different from rooftop solar STCs. If you are considering a battery, you should review the current Cheaper Home Batteries Program requirements separately.

How Platinum Energy Group Can Help

Platinum Energy Group provides solar panel installation across Wollongong, Shellharbour, Dapto, Albion Park, Port Kembla, Kiama and the wider Illawarra.

We can assess your electricity usage, roof space, shading, switchboard and existing electrical setup before recommending a solar system that suits the way your property actually uses energy.

We can also explain how the STC discount is incorporated into your solar quote and help you understand the practical cost of the system after applicable incentives.

If you already have solar, we can assess whether a solar system upgrade, inverter replacement or battery installation may be suitable.

Platinum Energy Group does not administer the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme and does not guarantee STC eligibility or a particular STC value. Final eligibility is determined under the Australian Government scheme requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a federal solar rebate in Australia?

Australia provides financial support for eligible rooftop solar systems through the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme. The support is delivered through Small scale Technology Certificates rather than a fixed cash rebate.

What are STCs?

STCs are Small scale Technology Certificates created under the Australian Government's Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Eligible solar systems can create STCs based on their expected renewable electricity generation.

How do STCs reduce the cost of solar?

Most homeowners assign the right to create their STCs to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront discount on the solar installation price.

How much is the federal solar rebate?

There is no fixed rebate amount. The value depends on the number of STCs the system can create and the market value of those certificates at the time.

Does the solar rebate reduce each year?

The number of STCs available generally reduces as the scheme approaches 2030. For systems installed in 2026 the deeming period is five years, reducing by one year for each subsequent installation year until 2030.

Do I need to claim STCs myself?

Usually not. Most customers assign their STCs to a registered agent in exchange for an upfront reduction in their solar installation price.

When does the Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme end?

The Small scale Renewable Energy Scheme is scheduled to operate until 31 December 2030.

Can Platinum Energy Group help me understand my STC discount?

Yes. Platinum Energy Group can explain how applicable STCs are incorporated into your solar quote and help you understand the overall cost of your proposed solar system. Final STC eligibility is determined under the Australian Government scheme.
